ABISHAI Most people know David killed Goliath. Fewer know about the day a giant nearly killed David. His name was Ishbibenob. David had gone back into battle against the Philistines, but this time he grew exhausted. Ishbibenob saw his chance and intended to kill him. Abishai got there first. He came to David’s aid and killed the giant. Afterward, David’s men told him he wasn’t going back into battle with them. “Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel.” 2 Samuel 21:17 KJV They had almost lost their king. They weren’t willing to let it happen again. David had faced Goliath when an entire army was afraid to move. Years later, he needed another man to save his life. I appreciate that the Bible includes both accounts. David was courageous, but he still got tired. His past victories didn’t make him invincible. Abishai recognized the danger and stepped in. David lived because somebody was watching his back. 2 Samuel 21:15–17 #MoreJoyMinistries
