THE BOOK OF THE WARS OF THE LORD There’s a lost book quoted in Numbers. “Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the LORD” Numbers 21:14 KJV The Book of the Wars of the LORD appears as Israel approaches Moab. Numbers draws from it while describing the Arnon and the border between Moab and the Amorites. Its title suggests a record of the LORD’s victories. We don’t know who compiled it, how much it contained, or when it disappeared. Only a brief quotation survives in Numbers. People hear “lost books” and think somebody took books out of the Bible. In this case, we have an ancient writing used as a source whose full text hasn’t survived. You can still read books like Enoch. You can’t do that with this one. What remains is preserved in Numbers 21:14–15. That’s how far back the biblical record reaches. It quotes a writing that has since been lost to history. #MoreJoyMinistries
