I BEHELD SATAN AS LIGHTNING FALL FROM HEAVEN “And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.” Luke 10:18 KJV People usually read this as Jesus describing Satan’s original rebellion. Maybe that’s in the background, but it isn’t what He was answering. Read the verse before it. “And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.” Luke 10:17 KJV Jesus had sent seventy disciples out to preach, heal the sick and cast out devils. They came back amazed that demons obeyed them. Jesus saw more than a successful ministry trip. He saw Satan losing territory. The Greek word translated “I beheld” is etheōroun. It carries the idea of watching something unfold. While the disciples were casting out devils, Jesus was watching the kingdom behind those devils take a direct hit. The men saw demons leave. Jesus saw Satan fall. “But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.” Luke 11:20 KJV Jesus then described Satan as a strong man guarding his house until a stronger Man came in and took what he had. That stronger Man was Jesus Christ. Satan had people bound. Christ came to take them back. LIKE LIGHTNING Jesus said Satan fell “as lightning.” The Greek word astrapē means a sudden flash of lightning. This wasn’t slow decline. Christ’s authority hit Satan’s kingdom hard and fast. Those demons may have tormented people for years. Once the name of Jesus Christ came against them, they were finished. That name isn’t a spell. Acts 19 proved that when the sons of Sceva tried using it without knowing Christ. “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?” Acts 19:15 KJV They borrowed the name without carrying the authority. It went badly. THE CROSS FINISHED THE CLAIM Luke 10 showed Satan’s kingdom being pushed back. The cross broke his claim. “And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” Colossians 2:15 KJV “Spolied” means stripped. Satan helped drive Jesus to the cross and walked straight into his own defeat. Sin was paid for. Death was broken. The accusation against every believer was answered by the blood of Christ. What looked like Satan’s victory became his public humiliation. Revelation 12 shows him cast out of heaven. Revelation 20 shows him thrown into the lake of fire. Luke 10 shows the collapse underway. AUTHORITY OVER POWER Jesus continued: “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy.” Luke 10:19 KJV The KJV uses “power” twice, but the Greek uses two different words. Exousia means authority. Dunamis means power or force. Jesus gave them authority over the enemy’s power. Satan has power. Jesus outranks him. “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” Matthew 28:18 KJV The word is exousia. All authority belongs to Jesus Christ. Every principality, power, angel, demon and earthly ruler stands beneath Him. Jesus and Satan are not equal opponents. One is the Creator. The other is a condemned rebel. PRINCIPALITIES AND POWERS “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world.” Ephesians 6:12 KJV Satan’s kingdom is organized. Scripture describes ranks, rulers and authorities operating behind the physical world. Luke 10 shows what happens when Christ’s authority hits that system. It breaks. Then Jesus corrected the disciples: “Rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.” Luke 10:20 KJV They came back impressed that demons knew their authority. Jesus reminded them that heaven knew their names. That was the real victory. “And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly.” Romans 16:20 KJV #MoreJoyMinistries
