Satan — Facts About the Devil: Satan is the Bible’s most notorious adversary—the chief opponent of God and His people, and the leader of hostile spiritual forces. Jesus said he was “a murderer from the beginning,” and Scripture consistently presents him as an active enemy engaged in spiritual warfare against the people of God. The Bible calls him Satan, the devil, the evil one, the tempter, and the accuser. Because we are commanded to resist him, stand firm against him, and not be ignorant of his schemes, it’s vital that we separate biblical truth from folklore. A NOTE ON WORLDVIEW The Bible was written in a supernatural worldview. Its original readers took spiritual beings seriously. To understand what Scripture teaches about Satan, we must read it through that lens—not a modern, materialistic one. 1. “Satan” Means Adversary- The word satan comes from Hebrew and simply means adversary or opponent. In the Old Testament, it is used of: The angel who opposed Balaam (Numbers 22) Human adversaries of David and Solomon (2 Samuel 19; 1 Kings 11) Over time, this title became a proper name for the ultimate adversary of God—the rebellious being behind the serpent in Eden. 2. Pride Fueled His Fall- Scripture does not give a full narrative of Satan’s rebellion, but the passages that allude to it consistently highlight pride. Ezekiel 28 uses the king of Tyre as a model of a deeper, cosmic rebellion—describing a being in Eden, full of beauty and wisdom, who became corrupt through pride. Isaiah 14 describes a fallen figure who sought to exalt himself above God and seize divine authority. The theme is clear: self-exaltation led to his downfall. 3. His Domain Became Earth and Death- After the rebellion symbolized in Genesis 3, Satan is cast down. He is associated with ʾerets—a word meaning both earth and the realm of the dead (Sheol). His desire to be “Most High” results in becoming “most low.” Scripture repeatedly associates Satan with death, darkness, and exile from God’s presence. 4. Satan Rules the Nations (Temporarily) The New Testament repeatedly affirms Satan’s authority over the present world system: “The whole world lies under the power of the evil one” (1 John 5:19) Satan offers Jesus the kingdoms of the world (Matthew 4:8–9) Jesus calls him “the ruler of this world” (John 12:31) This authority emerged after humanity’s rebellion and the scattering of the nations—but it is temporary and contested. 5. He Commands Demonic Forces- By Jesus’ time, Satan was widely understood as the ruler of demons. Jesus acknowledges this leadership but rejects the idea that He casts out demons by Satan’s power (Mark 3:23–26). Deliverance from demonic oppression was central to Christ’s ministry. Scripture does not say Satan rules all evil spirits—only that he is the most prominent adversary. 6. He Tried to Make a Deal- Satan offered Jesus a shortcut: authority without the cross. The cost? Worship. Jesus refused. This matters because Satan attempted to bargain with stolen property. The nations belonged to God—and God would reclaim them through redemption, not compromise. 7. Satan Is Now on the Defensive After resisting Satan, Jesus: Proclaimed the kingdom of God Chose disciples Began casting out demons Jesus declared that the gates of Hades would not prevail against His church. We are not hiding—we are advancing. 8. Satan Is a Liar by Nature Jesus was unequivocal: “There is no truth in him… he is a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44) Deception is Satan’s primary weapon. He disguises himself as light and influences both spiritual and human agents through lies. 9. Satan Has Spiritual “Children” Just as believers are called children of God, Scripture speaks of people who imitate Satan’s nature: Those who practice deceit, violence, and hatred Those aligned with falsehood rather than truth This goes back to Genesis—enmity between two spiritual family lines. 10. Satan Influenced Judas: Scripture says Satan entered Judas during the betrayal. Ironically, the event Satan orchestrated became the very means of his defeat. 11. His Power Over Death Is Broken Through the cross: Christ broke Satan’s hold over death (Hebrews 2:14–15) Jesus now holds the keys of death and Hades (Revelation 1:18) Death no longer has the final word. 12. Discord Gives Satan an Advantage Scripture warns that Satan gains ground through: Unforgiveness Unresolved anger Division within the church Sexual neglect within marriage Unity, humility, forgiveness, and vigilance are powerful defenses. 13. Satan’s Defeat Is Certain Revelation gives Satan’s final outcome: He will be cast into the lake of fire—forever defeated (Revelation 20:10) The timing is unknown, but the outcome is guaranteed. CONCLUSION: Satan is real, active, and dangerous—but defeated. Through Christ’s death and resurrection, his authority is broken and his end is sealed. Until that final day, believers are called to: Stay alert Walk in truth Resist the devil Stand firm in Christ’s victory The war is decided. The victory belongs to the Lord. - More Joy Ministries
