A COMPLETE BIBLE STUDY ON HELL: What the Bible actually says — without traditions, exaggerations, or fear tactics 1️⃣ HELL IN THE OLD TESTAMENT: SHEOL When you read “hell” in the Old Testament, the Hebrew word is usually Sheol. But Sheol does not mean a fiery pit of torment. What Sheol Means: - “The grave” - “The realm of the dead” - “The place where all the dead go” 👉 Both the righteous and the wicked expected to go there. - Jacob: “I will go down to Sheol to my son mourning” (Gen. 37:35). - Job: “Oh, that You would hide me in Sheol” (Job 14:13). - David: “If I make my bed in Sheol, You are there” (Ps. 139:8). Sheol is conscious — not annihilation. - The wicked: “There the wicked cease from troubling” (Job 3:17). - The godly: “God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol” (Ps. 49:15). 👉 The OT gives no picture of eternal fiery torment — only a shadowy realm of the dead, awaiting God’s judgment. 2️⃣ HELL IN THE NEW TESTAMENT: THREE WORDS When we come to the NT, English Bibles translate three different Greek words as “hell.” Understanding them clears up confusion. 1. Hades (ᾅδης) - Greek version of Sheol — temporary realm of the dead. - Jesus describes it as conscious (Luke 16:23). - Not the final hell. - The righteous and wicked are separated. 2. Gehenna (γέεννα) - The main word Jesus uses for “hell.” - Refers to the Valley of Hinnom outside Jerusalem — a cursed valley of idolatry and judgment. - Jesus uses Gehenna to describe final judgment: “fear Him who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna” (Matt. 10:28). - Associated with unquenchable fire (Mark 9:43–48). 3. Tartarus (τάρταρος) - Used only once (2 Pet. 2:4). - Place where certain angels are held. - Not the same as human punishment. 👉 Knowing these words prevents us from mixing temporary Hades with final Gehenna. 3️⃣ IS HELL ETERNAL? The Bible uses multiple images to describe eternal punishment: - 🔥 Eternal Fire — “everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels” (Matt. 25:41). - 💥 Eternal Destruction — “everlasting destruction away from the presence of the Lord” (2 Thess. 1:9). - 🌑 Outer Darkness — “weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matt. 8:12). - 🌋 Lake of Fire — the final hell (Rev. 20:14–15). 👉 Hell = eternal, conscious separation from God, expressed through fire, destruction, and darkness. 4️⃣ WHY IS HELL ETERNAL? - Because sin is against an infinitely holy God. - Because free will means continued rejection of God. - Because God’s justice is final and irreversible. 👉 Jesus spoke more about hell than anyone else — not to terrify, but to save: “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10). 5️⃣ WHO GOES TO HELL? The Bible is clear: - 🚫 The unrepentant wicked (Rev. 21:8; Gal. 5:19–21). - 🚫 Those who reject Christ (John 3:18; John 8:24). - 🚫 The devil and his angels (Matt. 25:41; Rev. 20:10). - 🚫 Hypocrites and false teachers (Matt. 7:21–23; 2 Pet. 2:1–3). 6️⃣ WHAT IS HELL LIKE? The Bible uses multiple descriptions so we don’t take any one picture too literally: - 🔥 Fire (Matt. 13:42; Rev. 20:15). - 🌑 Darkness (Matt. 22:13; Jude 13). - 🥵 Torment (Luke 16:23–24; Rev. 14:10–11). - 📜 Separation from God (2 Thess. 1:9). 👉 Fire + darkness coexist as imagery pointing to ultimate loss, ruin, agony, and exclusion. 7️⃣ IS HELL FAIR? Yes — because: - ⚖️ God judges perfectly (Ps. 98:9; Rev. 19:2). - 🌾 Punishment fits the offense (Luke 12:47–48). - ❤️ God desires none to perish (Ezek. 33:11; 2 Pet. 3:9). - ✝️ God paid the highest price to save us (Rom. 5:8; John 3:16). 8️⃣ SECOND CHANCE AFTER DEATH? The Bible says no. - “It is appointed unto men once to die, then the judgment” (Heb. 9:27). - “A great gulf fixed” (Luke 16:26). - “Let the wicked remain wicked” (Rev. 22:11). 👉 Life = mercy. Death = judgment. 9️⃣ WHY DID JESUS TALK ABOUT HELL? Not to scare us — but to save us. - To call people to repentance. - To expose false religion. - To reveal God’s justice. - To show urgency of salvation. 👉 He suffered the wrath we deserved (Isa. 53:5–6) so we wouldn’t. 🔟 THE GOOD NEWS: NO ONE HAS TO GO TO HELL Hell is real — but so is the cross. Jesus: - ✅ Paid your debt. - ✅ Took your punishment. - ✅ Conquered death. - ✅ Offers eternal life freely (Rom. 10:9–10; John 5:24; John 6:40). 📌 FINAL SUMMARY HELL = eternal punishment, separation from God, final judgment. THE GOSPEL = our only escape. 👉 Hell is not God’s desire for anyone. 👉 Salvation is freely offered in Christ. 🔥 Share this study to spread truth and hope it reaches Kirk Cameron, lol.
