Spiritual Gift of Apostleship: (Understanding the Difference) The spiritual gift of apostleship is often confused with the office of Apostle, but Scripture makes an important distinction. The Office of Apostle: The office of Apostle was limited to men personally chosen by Jesus—such as the Twelve (Mark 3:13–19) and Paul (Romans 1:1). Biblical qualifications included: Being an eyewitness of Jesus’ earthly ministry and resurrection (Acts 1:21–22; 1 Corinthians 9:1) Being personally called by Jesus Christ (Galatians 1:1) These Apostles were given unique authority to: Write Scripture (John 14:26; 2 Peter 3:15–16) Confirm the gospel through signs and miracles (2 Corinthians 12:12) That office has ceased. There are no modern Apostles with that same authority today. The Gift of Apostleship: While the office has ended, the gift of apostleship continues in a different sense. After His ascension, Christ gave gifts to the Church—apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers—to equip believers for ministry (Ephesians 4:7–12). Those with the gift of apostleship today: Do not write Scripture Do not lay the doctrinal foundation of the Church (that work is already complete) Instead, their mission is to: Plant churches and pioneer new ministries Take the Gospel where it has not been preached Cross cultural and geographical boundaries Raise up leaders and equip pastors Establish and strengthen ministries in difficult or unreached areas These individuals are often: Visionary and entrepreneurial Willing to take risks for the Gospel Leaders of leaders and ministers to ministers Influencers who help shape and expand Kingdom work Missionaries, church planters, certain Christian scholars, institutional leaders, and those overseeing multiple ministries or churches often operate in this gift. Scripture References: Ephesians 4:11 • 1 Corinthians 12:28 • Acts 1:21–22 • 1 Corinthians 9:1 The foundation has been laid—but the work of advancing the Gospel continues. - More Joy Ministries
