THE SPIRITUAL GIFT OF DISCERNING SPIRITS: A lot of people hear “discerning of spirits” and immediately start thinking about spooky vibes, mystical impressions, or somebody claiming they can walk into a room and feel demons floating around. That is not what the Bible is talking about. The gift of discerning spirits is listed in 1 Corinthians 12:10 as one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. And like every other true spiritual gift, it is given by the Spirit of God, not self-appointed, not self-produced, and not something a man gets to claim because he thinks it makes him sound deep or powerful. Paul makes that clear in 1 Corinthians 12:11. The Spirit gives gifts “as he will.” That means God decides. Not ego. Not church culture. Not charisma. Now every believer should grow in discernment. Hebrews 5:13–14 teaches that spiritual maturity produces the ability to discern both good and evil. A believer who is grounded in Scripture, exercised in the Word, and growing in obedience should not stay spiritually gullible. He should learn to recognize error, test what he hears, and stop being tossed around by every religious fad, smooth-talking preacher, and fake spiritual movement that comes down the road. So in that sense, all Christians are supposed to become discerning. But the gift of discerning spirits goes further. This is a Spirit-given ability in certain believers to identify what is truly of God and what is not, especially when false doctrine, deception, counterfeit spirituality, or demonic influence is hiding under religious language. And let’s make this plain: this gift is not about getting extra-biblical messages from God. It is not somebody saying, “God told me there’s a spirit behind your headache.” It is not mystical theatrics. It is not Christian fortune-telling. Real biblical discernment is tied to truth. The person with this gift becomes so rooted in the Word of God that spiritual fraud stands out. They can hear a sermon, teaching, prophecy claim, movement, or doctrine and spot the corruption in it because it does not line up with Scripture. That is why 1 John 4:1 says, “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.” How do you try the spirits? Not by emotion. Not by atmosphere. Not by how passionate somebody sounds. By the Word of God. Acts 17:11 praises the Bereans because they searched the Scriptures daily to see whether the things preached to them were true. That is discernment. Second Timothy 2:15 says we are to rightly divide the word of truth. That is discernment too. The gift of discerning spirits is desperately needed in a church world full of counterfeits. A lot of people today are impressed by confidence, stage presence, titles, crowds, stories, and emotions. But none of that proves the Holy Spirit is at work. False teachers can sound smooth. False prophets can sound intense. Deceiving spirits do not show up wearing name tags. That is why discernment matters. Some believers are especially gifted by God to expose the doctrinal forgery, the spiritual manipulation, the twisted text, and the fake anointing that weaker believers might miss. But even then, the purpose of the gift is not to dominate people, act superior, or build a brand around being the guy who “calls everybody out.” Spiritual gifts were given to edify the body, not exalt the flesh. According to Ephesians 4:12, the gifts are for the perfecting of the saints, the work of the ministry, and the edifying of the body of Christ. So if a man claims discernment but uses it to puff himself up, bully others, or make everything about his special insight, something is already off. Real discernment is not proud. It is not theatrical. It is not self-worship wearing a ministry mask. It is truth-guided, Scripture-anchored, Spirit-enabled, and used in love for the protection and strengthening of God’s people. The church does not need less discernment right now. It needs more. Because not everything spiritual is from the Holy Spirit. And not every voice using the name of Jesus belongs to Him. If you do not know the Word, you will get played. If you do know the Word, a lot of the fog starts clearing fast. “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” 1 Thessalonians 5:21 #MoreJoyMinistries
