HYSSOP: PASSOVER TO THE CROSS Hyssop is one of those tiny Bible details that turns into a whole sermon when you slow down. At the first Passover, Israel was told to kill the lamb and put the blood on the door. But look how they applied it. Exodus 12:22 says: “And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood…” Hyssop touched the blood. Hyssop carried the blood. Hyssop put the blood where God commanded it to go. That night, judgment was coming through Egypt. The difference between life and death was not the goodness of the people inside the house. It was the blood on the door. God said: “When I see the blood, I will pass over you.” Exodus 12:13 That’s the whole sermon. The lamb had to die. The blood had to be applied. And the blood stood between them and judgment. Then David picks up the same picture after his sin. Psalm 51:7 says: “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” David knew he was dirty. He knew sin had stained him. He knew only God could wash what guilt had ruined. “Purge me with hyssop.” That is a guilty man begging God to make him clean. Then go to the cross. Jesus is hanging there as the true Passover Lamb. John 19:29 says: “Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.” There it is again. Hyssop. At Passover, hyssop carried the blood of the lamb to the door. At Calvary, hyssop is lifted to the mouth of the Lamb of God. Tell me God doesn’t write perfectly. John the Baptist said: “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” John 1:29 Paul said: “For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us.” 1 Corinthians 5:7 When you see hyssop in Exodus and then hyssop at the cross, don’t read past it. God is connecting the dots. The lamb in Egypt was pointing to Jesus. The blood on the door was pointing to the blood on the cross. Passover was pointing to Calvary. And hyssop was standing there in both places. The blood on the door said judgment passed over. The blood of Jesus says judgment has been satisfied. The first lamb covered a house. The Lamb of God takes away sin. But here is the part people hate. The blood still has to be applied. You can know about Jesus and still be lost. You can respect the cross and still refuse the Savior. You can talk Bible and still never be washed. The question is not whether there is blood. The question is whether the blood has been applied to you. Because judgment is coming. And when it comes, God is not looking for your church record, your good intentions, your personality, your excuses, or your religious résumé. He is looking for the blood. Jesus Christ is the Lamb. The cross is the altar. His blood is the payment. And if you are in Him, judgment passes over. Purge me with hyssop. Wash me. Make me clean. That little plant preached the Gospel from Egypt all the way to Calvary. #MoreJoyMinistries
