ANOTHER COMFORTER “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.” John 14:16 KJV Jesus is hours from the cross, and the disciples are about to lose the physical presence they’ve depended on for three years. Then He gives them this promise. “Another Comforter.” The Greek word for “another” is allos. It means another of the same kind. Jesus wasn’t saying, “I’m leaving, so here’s a lesser replacement.” He was promising the Holy Spirit. The word translated “Comforter” is paraklētos. One called alongside to help. Advocate. Helper. Counselor. Strengthener. And notice the last four words. “Abide with you for ever.” Jesus would leave them physically. The Holy Spirit would not. Under the Old Testament, the Spirit could come upon men for a purpose and later depart. David prayed, “take not thy holy spirit from me.” Psalm 51:11. Christ gives His people something better under the New Covenant. The Spirit doesn’t merely visit the believer. He moves in. Jesus continues in the next verse, “for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” John 14:17. Christianity is not God handing you a book of instructions and watching from heaven to see how well you perform. God Himself takes up residence in the believer. That means the Christian life is not lived alone, and salvation does not leave a man spiritually orphaned. Christ promised His people the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit. Not for a season. Not until you stumble. For ever. #MoreJoyMinistries
