THE TRINITY ISN’T THREE GODS Most confusion about the Trinity starts with one simple mistake. People hear one God and assume that must mean one Person. Scripture never says that. The historic Christian claim is much more precise. One divine Being. Three distinct Persons. The Father is God. The Son is God. The Holy Ghost is God. Yet the Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Holy Ghost, and the Holy Ghost is not the Father. That isn’t a contradiction because we aren’t saying God is one Person and three Persons in the same sense. This is where the Greek vocabulary actually helps. Οὐσία, ousia, came to be used for essence or being. Ὑπόστασις, hypostasis, came to be used for personal subsistence or Person. So the theological shorthand became one ousia, three hypostaseis. One WHAT. Three WHOS. That language wasn’t invented to replace Scripture. Christians developed it because Scripture forced them to distinguish between what God is and who the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are. And this is where the hypostatic union helps. Jesus Christ is one Person with two natures. He is fully God and fully man. His humanity didn’t turn into deity. His deity didn’t turn into humanity. Jesus didn’t become two people stuffed inside one body. One Person. Two complete natures. John says, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us...” John 1:14 KJV The Word didn’t stop being God when He became flesh. This is exactly why person and nature cannot mean the same thing. Christ has two natures while remaining one Person. Now bring that same precision into the Trinity. God has one divine nature, eternally possessed by three distinct Persons. That doesn’t mean the Father is one third of God. Jesus isn’t another third. The Holy Ghost isn’t the last third. Each is fully God because the divine essence cannot be chopped into pieces. John gives us the whole problem in one sentence. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1 KJV Look at the Greek. καὶ ὁ λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν θεόν The Word was pros ton Theon, with God. There is distinction. Then John immediately writes, καὶ θεὸς ἦν ὁ λόγος The Word was God. There is deity. John doesn't allow you to erase either side. If you say Jesus is a separate lesser god, you've denied biblical monotheism. If you say Jesus is merely the Father wearing a different mask, you've destroyed the distinction John deliberately wrote into the sentence. Jesus Himself makes that impossible. “And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.” John 17:5 KJV The Son didn't begin in Bethlehem. He shared glory with the Father before creation. Then Jesus says, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter...” John 14:16 KJV Jesus speaks to the Father about the Holy Ghost. You have real personal distinction without three gods. Matthew 28:19 makes it even cleaner. “...baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” Matthew 28:19 KJV The Greek uses ὄνομα, onoma, “name,” in the singular. One name. Then Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are each distinguished. Jesus didn't say “in the names” as though He were introducing three separate gods. Now go back to the Hebrew Bible. “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD” Deuteronomy 6:4 KJV שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ יְהוָה אֶחָד Shema Yisrael, YHWH Eloheinu, YHWH echad. YHWH is echad, one. Christians don't get to throw that verse away. There is one God. And we also don't need to play games with the Hebrew. Echad is simply the normal Hebrew word for “one.” It can describe collective unity in some contexts, but the word by itself isn't a secret code meaning “Trinity.” The Trinity rests on the whole testimony of Scripture. The Old Testament establishes uncompromising monotheism while giving glimpses of distinction within God's revelation. Then the New Testament pulls the curtain open. The Father loves the Son. The Son speaks to the Father. The Father sends the Son. The Son returns to the Father. The Holy Ghost speaks, teaches, sends, forbids, intercedes and can be grieved. At Jesus' baptism the distinction is impossible to miss. Christ is standing in the Jordan. The Holy Ghost descends upon Him. The Father's voice comes from heaven. “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:17 KJV That's not Jesus throwing His voice from heaven while simultaneously turning Himself into a dove. Father. Son. Holy Ghost. Distinct Persons. One God. And Hebrews gives us another Greek word worth seeing. Speaking of Christ, it calls Him “the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person...” Hebrews 1:3 KJV The Greek behind “person” there is ὑπόστασις, hypostasis. In the New Testament the word had a broader range than the later technical theological definition, including substance, reality and assurance. Christians later used it more precisely when explaining the Godhead. That historical vocabulary gave us the word hypostatic in “hypostatic union.” Again, theology didn't create the biblical reality. It gave us vocabulary so we could stop talking past each other. The Trinity isn't saying three Gods somehow equal one God. It's saying the one eternal divine Being revealed in Scripture exists eternally as Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. The hypostatic union says the eternal Son then took upon Himself a genuine human nature without surrendering His divine nature. So when Jesus gets hungry, sleeps, bleeds and dies, His humanity is real. When He forgives sins, receives worship, commands creation, knows the hearts of men and declares, “Before Abraham was, I am.” John 8:58 KJV His deity is just as real. One Christ. Two natures. One God. Three Persons. Once you stop confusing being, person, and nature, the supposed contradiction disappears. You may not be able to fully comprehend an infinite God, but you can absolutely understand what Scripture is claiming. “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” 1 John 5:7 KJV #MoreJoyMinistries
