POTIPHAR’S WIFE: Potiphar’s wife doesn’t even get a name in the Bible, but everybody remembers what she did. Joseph had already been betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, and carried into Egypt. Still, the LORD was with him, and Potiphar trusted him with everything he owned. Then his wife set her eyes on Joseph. “Lie with me.” Genesis 39:7 KJV Joseph refused. His reason wasn’t that Potiphar might catch him. It wasn’t fear of losing his position. “How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” Genesis 39:9 KJV That’s Joseph’s character right there. She kept after him until one day she grabbed his garment and tried to pull him into bed. Joseph didn’t negotiate with lust. He ran. He left the coat in her hand and got out of there. Then she used the same garment as evidence against him and accused him of trying to sleep with her. Joseph did the right thing and went to prison for it. That’s a part of this story people miss. Doing right doesn’t always pay off immediately. Sometimes integrity costs you. Sometimes somebody lies about you. Sometimes obedience puts you in a worse position before God puts you in a better one. Joseph went from slavery to a false accusation to prison. And the Bible still says, “But the LORD was with Joseph.” Genesis 39:21 KJV Potiphar’s wife could ruin his name and take his freedom. She couldn’t take his character. Joseph eventually walked out of that prison and became second only to Pharaoh in Egypt. So when temptation comes, remember Joseph.
