SHAMMAH Here’s a guy who gets two verses in the Bible, but those two verses tell you just about everything you need to know about him. His name was Shammah. He was one of David’s mighty men. The Philistines had gathered together in a field full of lentils, and when Israel saw them coming, everybody took off. Shammah didn’t. “But he stood in the midst of the ground, and defended it, and slew the Philistines: and the LORD wrought a great victory.” 2 Samuel 23:12 KJV That’s basically his entire story. Everybody else ran. Shammah planted himself in the middle of that field and fought. I’ve heard people preach this passage like the lesson is that Shammah really loved lentils. This wasn’t about a bowl of beans. That field belonged to Israel. Their enemies came to take something that wasn’t theirs, and while everybody else decided it wasn’t worth defending, Shammah decided he wasn’t giving them another inch. There’s something else in the verse that matters. The Bible doesn’t say Shammah wrought a great victory. The LORD did. Shammah stood. God gave the victory. #MoreJoyMinistries
