THE LINE OF DAVID NEVER BROKE: God promised David that the Messiah would come from his house. “I will set up thy seed after thee… and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever.” 2 Samuel 7:12–13 KJV Then the genealogy gets interesting. David’s royal line ran through Solomon, eventually reaching King Jeconiah. Jeremiah pronounced judgment on Jeconiah’s line and said none of his descendants would prosper sitting upon the throne of David. “Write ye this man childless… for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David.” Jeremiah 22:30 KJV That looks like a serious problem. The Messiah had to be David’s son, yet the royal line through Solomon had come under judgment. Then you get to Jesus. Matthew traces the royal succession from David through Solomon, Jeconiah and eventually Joseph. Joseph was legally Jesus’ father, which gave Jesus the legal claim to David’s throne. Jesus wasn’t Joseph’s biological son. Luke records a different path back to David. Instead of going through Solomon, the genealogy goes through David’s son Nathan. Many Christians throughout church history have understood Luke as preserving Mary’s family line, with Joseph named according to the genealogical custom of the time. Two branches from David. One through Solomon carried the royal succession and eventually reached Joseph. The other through Nathan reached the family of Mary. Jesus was therefore truly descended from David according to the flesh, while also receiving the legal right to David’s throne through Joseph without being biologically descended from Jeconiah. The apparent roadblock never stopped the promise. Mary also wasn’t marrying outside the Messianic family and somehow bringing Jesus back into Judah afterward. Joseph himself was already “of the house and lineage of David.” “Because he was of the house and lineage of David.” Luke 2:4 KJV Both roads point back to the same place. David. Judah. Abraham. The throne required a Son of David. The curse presented a problem. The virgin birth solved it without breaking a single promise. God didn’t improvise at Bethlehem. He had been moving the pieces for generations. #MoreJoyMinistries
