Who Was Melchizedek? The Mysterious King-Priest of Scripture Genesis 14:18-20 “And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said, ‘Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth.’ And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.” Melchizedek is one of the Bible’s most mysterious figures. His name means “King of Righteousness”, and he is also the King of Salem (“Peace”) and a priest of God Most High. But why is he so important? 1. A Priest Before the Levitical Priesthood: Abraham gave him a tithe, showing Melchizedek’s authority even over the father of Israel. Hebrews 7:3 says he is “without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God.” This points to a priesthood not based on lineage, unlike the Levitical priests. 2. A Foreshadow of Christ: Psalm 110:4: “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: ‘You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.’” Jesus is the ultimate King-Priest: eternal, righteous, and interceding for us. Melchizedek’s bread and wine foreshadow the Lord’s Supper. 3. Lessons for Us: Faith matters more than lineage. God’s calling is what makes a priesthood effective. Give God first place: Abraham’s tithe reminds us to honor God first. Takeaway- Melchizedek may appear only briefly in Scripture, but he points us to Jesus Christ, our eternal High Priest. God’s plan of salvation was foreshadowed long before the Levitical priesthood, showing His eternal wisdom. Hebrews 7:19 – “For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did, by which we draw near to God.” - More Joy Ministries
