WHY DID GOD TELL THE SERPENT TO EAT DUST? The serpent promised Eve she could become as gods. He made disobedience sound like a step up. Then God put him on his belly. “Upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life” Genesis 3:14 KJV Why dust? Look at how Scripture uses that picture. Psalm 72:9 says the king’s enemies will lick the dust. Micah 7:17 describes defeated nations licking dust like a serpent and trembling before the Lord. Eating dust pictures humiliation. An enemy brought to the ground. The serpent talked humanity into reaching above its place. His sentence put him beneath it. Now look at Adam. God formed him from the dust. After his sin, God told him he would return to it. “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken” Genesis 3:19 KJV Adam would work the ground until the ground received his body. The serpent would crawl through it. The same dust now carried a picture of human death and the deceiver’s disgrace. Genesis already calls the creature a serpent before the curse. It does not describe what his body looked like beforehand. What it gives us is the sentence. Upon his belly, in the dust, under judgment. Revelation identifies the enemy behind the deception as “that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan.” Revelation 12:9 KJV Then God announces something far worse for him than crawling. The woman’s seed will bruise his head. “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” Genesis 3:15 KJV Here is the first promise of the coming Saviour, right in the middle of the judgment. The serpent would bruise His heel. Christ would suffer. Yet that suffering would not keep Him from crushing the enemy. Thousands of years later, Paul writes this to the church. “And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly.” Romans 16:20 KJV There he is again. Beneath the feet of those who belong to Christ. Even in Isaiah’s picture of the coming kingdom, when the wolf and lamb feed together and the lion eats straw like the ox, dust is still the serpent’s food. Isaiah 65:25 His humiliation remains. Think about what Adam and Eve heard that day. They had sinned. They were ashamed, afraid, and facing death. Before they ever left Eden, God announced that a descendant of the woman the serpent deceived would crush his head. The serpent had done his damage. God had already announced his defeat. Jesus was coming. #MoreJoyMinistries
