WHY DID JESUS SINGLE OUT THESE SEVEN CHURCHES? Plenty of churches existed when John wrote Revelation. Jesus chose seven and told John to write to them by name. Look at what He addressed. These same problems are sitting in churches right now. Ephesus knew how to spot a false teacher. They worked hard and stood for truth, but had left their first love. Being right means very little when your love for Christ has grown cold. Smyrna was poor and persecuted. Jesus called them rich. Try telling that to a preacher who measures your faith by your bank account. Pergamos held onto His name while allowing corrupt doctrine inside the church. They tolerated teaching that led people into idolatry and sexual sin. Thyatira had love, faith, and good works. They also tolerated a false prophetess who seduced His servants. Jesus held them accountable for allowing it. Sardis had a good reputation. Jesus said they were dead. Apparently, a church can fool an entire community. Philadelphia had little strength, but kept His Word and refused to deny His name. Jesus opened a door nobody could shut. He never told them they needed a bigger building. Laodicea had money and thought they needed nothing. Jesus called them poor, blind, and naked. They were comfortable enough to forget how badly they needed Him. Only Smyrna and Philadelphia received no rebuke. So why these seven? Scripture does not spell out why these particular congregations were chosen. Seven carries the theme of completeness throughout Revelation, and together these letters give a broad picture of the Church’s spiritual condition. These were real churches. Their letters reach far beyond their own congregations. “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” Revelation 3:22 KJV That instruction appears in every letter. Everyone was supposed to pay attention. Jesus knows what goes on inside His churches. A full parking lot and a popular pastor will never cover up what He sees. Read Revelation 2 and 3. See how much of it sounds familiar. #MoreJoyMinistries
