WHY DOES JESUS HAVE TWO GENEALOGIES? Jesus had to fulfill two requirements at the same time. He had to be a true descendant of David, and He had to possess the legal right to David’s throne. Matthew follows the royal line through David’s son Solomon down to Joseph. Joseph was not the biological father of Jesus, but he was His legal father. That placed Jesus legally within the royal house of David. Luke follows the bloodline through David’s son Nathan. This records His actual human descent through Mary. One genealogy establishes the royal claim. The other establishes the bloodline. But neither genealogy explains the miracle of His birth. “The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee” Luke 1:35 KJV Jesus was not conceived by Joseph. He was conceived by the Holy Ghost and born of a virgin. He entered the human race without inheriting His identity from a human father. He was fully human, truly descended from David according to the flesh, yet He remained the Son of God. “Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh” Romans 1:3 KJV Luke then carries the genealogy beyond David, beyond Abraham, and all the way back to Adam. That is where the full picture comes into view. “The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.” 1 Corinthians 15:45 KJV Adam stood as the head of fallen humanity. His disobedience brought sin and death into the world. Jesus Christ came as the last Adam. Where Adam failed, Christ obeyed. What Adam lost through sin, Christ came to recover through His death and resurrection. Joseph established the legal claim to the throne. Mary established the human descent from David. The virgin birth declared that this was no ordinary son. Jesus Christ is the promised seed, the rightful King, and the last Adam. #MoreJoyMinistries
