THE MOST IMPORTANT CONTRAST IN THE BIBLE “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23 KJV Paul puts the entire problem of mankind and the only solution in one verse. Wages and gift. Wages are earned. They’re owed because work has been done. Death is what sin has earned us. Then Paul changes the language completely. “But the gift of God is eternal life…” Eternal life isn’t another wage. God doesn’t owe Heaven to anyone because they attended church, lived a decent life, gave money, or became more religious than the person next door. You cannot earn a gift. We earned death through sin, but God offers eternal life through Jesus Christ because Christ paid our debt at the cross. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.” Ephesians 2:8 KJV Religion tells man to work harder and hope he has done enough. The Gospel says Jesus Christ already did what man never could. Salvation isn’t God rewarding good people. It’s God saving guilty people who place their faith in Jesus Christ.
