“I WILL NOT BLOT OUT”

Revelation 3:5 keeps being used to claim that a saved person’s name can be erased from the book of life because of willful sin. Read what Jesus actually said: “He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.” Revelation 3:5 KJV Jesus says, “I will NOT blot out his name.” The verse does not say, “I will blot out your name if you commit willful sin.” Those words are being added to His statement. The verse promises the overcomer that his name will remain. To understand that promise, we need to understand who the overcomer is. First John 5:4 says those born of God overcome the world and identifies faith as the victory. Then verse 5 says: “Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” 1 John 5:5 KJV Read those passages together. The overcomer is the believer in Jesus Christ. Jesus promises that overcomer that He will not blot out his name. Revelation 3:5 does not describe someone being saved, committing a sin, and then having his name erased. Using it to teach that requires adding a conclusion the verse does not state.
