THE LOCUSTS OF REVELATION 9: (DEMONS RELEASED DURING THE TRIBULATION) One of the most terrifying and misunderstood passages in Bible prophecy appears in Revelation chapter 9. Many people assume the locusts described there are symbolic or natural insects. Scripture, however, gives details that make it clear these are something far more disturbing. During the Fifth Trumpet Judgment, a fallen star is given the key to the bottomless pit, also called the Abyss. When the pit is opened, smoke rises and darkens the sky. Out of that smoke come creatures described as locusts, but their appearance immediately shows they are not natural insects. Revelation 9 describes them as having bodies like horses prepared for battle. They wear something like crowns of gold. Their faces resemble human faces. They have hair like women, teeth like lions, breastplates like iron, wings that sound like chariots rushing into war, and tails like scorpions capable of delivering agonizing torment. These beings are not allowed to harm vegetation, which real locusts normally destroy. Instead, they are commanded to torment people who do not have God’s seal. Their torment lasts five months, and it is so severe that Scripture says people will desperately seek death but will not be able to die. Death itself flees from them. Revelation 9:6 says, “In those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.” The Bible also tells us these locusts have a king over them, called Abaddon in Hebrew and Apollyon in Greek. Both names mean Destroyer. This is extremely important because Proverbs 30:27 says natural locusts have no king. That alone shows these are supernatural beings operating under organized leadership. The strongest biblical interpretation is that these creatures are demonic entities that have been imprisoned in the Abyss and are temporarily released as part of God’s judgment during the Tribulation period. This aligns with Luke 8:31, where demons begged Jesus not to send them into the Abyss, showing it is a place of demonic confinement. There is also a powerful Old Testament parallel in Joel chapter 2. Joel describes a prophetic locust army with an appearance like horses rushing into battle, darkening the heavens and bringing devastation. Many scholars believe Joel’s prophecy foreshadows the events described in Revelation. The locust imagery itself is deeply symbolic. Throughout the Bible, locusts represent overwhelming invasion and divine judgment. Here, God intensifies that imagery into a supernatural army that brings spiritual and physical torment. Their description carries layered meaning. Their battle-ready horse appearance shows organized warfare. Their crowns indicate temporary authority granted by God. Their human-like faces suggest intelligence and intentional targeting. Their lion-like teeth symbolize ferocity. Their iron breastplates represent invincibility during their appointed time. Their scorpion tails represent lingering and unbearable suffering. This judgment serves several purposes. It reveals the terrifying reality of demonic power. It demonstrates God’s absolute authority, since even these beings operate under strict limits. It also serves as a warning, confronting humanity with the consequences of rebellion against God. Yet one of the most sobering truths appears at the end of the chapter. Even after experiencing unimaginable torment, many people still refuse to repent. Revelation 9:20–21 tells us humanity continues in idolatry, violence, immorality, and deception despite witnessing divine judgment. Prophetically, this event occurs after the Church is removed from the earth and during the Trumpet Judgments of the Tribulation timeline. It stands as one of the clearest reminders that God’s warnings are real, His authority is absolute, and spiritual warfare is not symbolic mythology. It is reality. - More Joy Ministries #MoreJoyMinistries
