EDUCATION OR INDOCTRINATION? I’m no political theorist, and I’m still studying this myself. The more I dig into it, though, the more I realize how often we use words like Marxism, socialism, communism, and capitalism without really knowing what they mean. They aren’t interchangeable. Marxism comes from the ideas associated primarily with Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Marx viewed history largely through class conflict, especially the struggle between those who own the means of production and those who sell their labor. Socialism is a much broader term. There have been different forms of socialism, but the common thread is social, collective, or governmental ownership or control of significant parts of the economy. Communism, especially in Marxist theory, goes further toward the eventual abolition of private ownership of the means of production and a classless society. Capitalism is built primarily around private ownership, voluntary exchange, investment, competition, and markets. That’s obviously the short version. Entire libraries have been written arguing over these ideas. Which is exactly my point. Before we defend something or attack it, we ought to understand what it actually teaches. That’s education. Indoctrination is different. It starts with the conclusion and works backward. Instead of teaching you how to examine an idea, it teaches you which answer you’re expected to give. There’s nothing wrong with teaching Marx. Read him. Then read Adam Smith. Study capitalism, socialism, Marxism, communism, the Soviet Union, Maoist China, the Cold War, American constitutional government, free markets, government intervention, and what happened when these ideas were actually put into practice. Study their successes, failures, promises, consequences, and critics. Don’t hand somebody one side of an argument and congratulate yourself for educating them. Give them the evidence and teach them how to think. I don’t want a generation trained to repeat MY political opinions either. I’d rather have people capable of opening a book, checking a source, recognizing propaganda, questioning authority, challenging their own assumptions, and changing their minds when the evidence demands it. You can teach someone WHAT to think. Or you can teach them HOW to think. Those are two very different things. #MoreJoyMinistries
