WORLD RELIGIONS EXAMINED: (Hinduism) “Test all things; hold fast what is good.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:21 Hinduism is one of the oldest religious systems in the world, with over one billion adherents. Unlike most religions, Hinduism is not a single, unified belief system but a vast collection of philosophies, practices, and traditions developed over thousands of years. Because of its complexity and influence, it is important to examine what Hinduism teaches and how it compares with the truth revealed in Scripture. What Hinduism Teaches: Hinduism encompasses a wide range of beliefs, but several themes are common. Hinduism generally teaches that reality is ultimately impersonal, often described as Brahman, an all-encompassing divine essence. The many gods and goddesses of Hinduism are viewed by many adherents as manifestations or expressions of this ultimate reality. Human beings are seen as trapped in a cycle of rebirth (reincarnation) known as samsara. Life is governed by karma—the law that every action has consequences that determine one’s future lives. The goal of Hinduism is liberation (moksha)—escape from the cycle of rebirth—achieved through knowledge, devotion, meditation, moral living, or ritual practice. What Hinduism Says About Jesus: Jesus is not central to Hindu belief. He is often viewed as: A wise teacher. A spiritual master. One of many enlightened figures. Jesus is not worshiped as the Son of God, Savior, or Lord. His death and resurrection are not considered essential—or even necessary—for salvation. Where Hinduism Conflicts with Scripture: The Bible presents a radically different view of God and humanity. Scripture teaches that God is personal, not an impersonal force: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1) The Bible teaches one life, followed by judgment—not reincarnation: “It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27) Sin is not ignorance to be overcome through enlightenment, but rebellion against a holy God that requires atonement: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) Grace vs. Self-Effort: Hinduism ultimately places the burden of liberation on the individual. Progress is achieved through accumulated effort over many lifetimes. Christianity proclaims something entirely different. Salvation is not achieved through spiritual evolution or moral improvement. It is received as a gift: “By grace you have been saved through faith… not of works.” (Ephesians 2:8–9) Where Hinduism offers many paths upward, the gospel declares that God came down in the person of Jesus Christ. Why This Matters: Hinduism offers spiritual insight, discipline, and moral reflection—but it cannot reconcile humanity to God. Only Jesus Christ: Took sin upon Himself. Died in the place of sinners. Rose bodily from the grave. “There is salvation in no one else.” (Acts 4:12) Truth is not discovered by climbing inward or cycling endlessly through lives. Truth is revealed in a Person. Jesus Christ is not one path among many. He is the way. - Tony Campbell - More Joy Ministries #morejoyministries
