Halloween is often viewed as harmless entertainment or a festive activity for children. Yet Scripture makes it clear that followers of Christ are not to participate in the works of darkness: “Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them” (Ephesians 5:11) and “Abstain from every form of evil” (1 Thessalonians 5:22). Paul further warns, “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14). The origins of Halloween trace back over 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when pagans believed the boundary between the living and the dead was thin. They lit fires, wore disguises, and left offerings for wandering spirits to protect themselves from harm. These practices were always rooted in pagan spirituality and the occult, not in biblical faith. No matter how much modern society has repackaged Halloween, at its core it celebrates themes that oppose God—death, fear, witchcraft, spirits, and the demonic. God commands His people not to imitate the customs of those who practice divination, consult the dead, or engage in occult rituals (Deuteronomy 18:9–12). True biblical faith is not about blending in with the world, but standing apart in obedience to Christ. Choosing holiness over cultural conformity is not legalism—it is love for God expressed through loyalty to His Word. As Paul wrote, ‘Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind’ (Romans 12:2). Following Christ means rejecting anything the world calls acceptable that glorifies darkness—even if presented as harmless or kid-friendly—and instead obeying the clear commands of God’s Word.
