WORLD RELIGIONS EXAMINED: (Buddhism) “Test all things; hold fast what is good.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:21 Buddhism is practiced by hundreds of millions of people worldwide and is often viewed in the West not as a religion, but as a philosophy or path to inner peace. Because of this, many people assume Buddhism is compatible with Christianity. A closer look shows otherwise. As always, this study is not an attack on people. Many Buddhists are sincere, disciplined, and morally serious. But sincerity does not make a belief system true. What Buddhism Teaches: Buddhism is fundamentally non-theistic. It does not teach belief in a personal Creator God. Instead, it begins with the assumption that existence itself is marked by suffering. Buddhism teaches that suffering is caused by desire and attachment. The solution is not forgiveness or redemption, but detachment, achieved through moral discipline, meditation, and insight. The ultimate goal is nirvana—the extinguishing of desire and the end of the cycle of rebirth. Nirvana is not eternal life with God, but the cessation of individual existence as it is currently experienced. What Buddhism Says About Jesus: Jesus has no central place in Buddhism. He may be regarded as: A wise teacher A moral example An enlightened man Jesus is not worshiped as God. He is not viewed as a Savior. His death and resurrection have no saving significance within Buddhist teaching. Where Buddhism Conflicts with Scripture Scripture begins with God. Buddhism begins without Him. The Bible teaches that suffering is not an illusion to escape, but a consequence of sin in a fallen world: “Through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin.” (Romans 5:12) The Bible teaches that the problem is not desire alone, but sin, and that sin requires atonement: “Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” (Hebrews 9:22) The Bible also teaches personal existence beyond death—not extinction: “These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” (Matthew 25:46) Self-Effort vs. Salvation: Buddhism places the burden of liberation entirely on the individual. Enlightenment is achieved through effort, discipline, and insight over many lifetimes. Christianity proclaims something fundamentally different. Salvation is not achieved by emptying oneself of desire, but by being reconciled to God through Jesus Christ: “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) Christianity does not offer escape from existence. It offers restoration of relationship. Why This Matters: Buddhism can cultivate discipline and calm, but it cannot deal with guilt, sin, or reconciliation with God. Only Jesus Christ: Addresses the root problem of sin Offers forgiveness, not detachment Promises resurrection, not extinction “I am the resurrection and the life.” (John 11:25) Peace is not found by dissolving the self. Peace is found by being made right with God. - More Joy Ministries
