THE MASONIC OATH: (WHAT CHRISTIANS SHOULD KNOW) Many Christians are unaware that Freemasonry requires formal oaths, called “obligations,” taken during ritual initiation. These are not casual promises. They are sworn vows, taken before God, and considered binding upon the conscience. This matters deeply, because Jesus spoke directly and clearly about oaths. In Freemasonry, every candidate must swear an obligation as he advances through the degrees. These oaths are taken before God, or a so-called “Supreme Being,” and are usually sworn on a sacred text. They include a vow of secrecy regarding rituals, signs, and passwords, as well as an allegiance to the lodge and its members. Historically, they also included symbolic penalties for breaking the oath. These obligations are not taken once, but repeatedly, as a man progresses through the degrees. Older, historically documented Masonic obligations contained self-imprecatory language, meaning the person called punishment upon himself if he violated secrecy. Traditional Masonic monitors record penalties involving the throat, the heart, and the body. While many modern lodges soften the wording today, the structure remains the same: swear secrecy, bind the conscience, and advance by compliance. Jesus did not leave the issue of oaths unclear. “But I tell you, do not swear at all… Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ Anything beyond this comes from evil.” — Matthew 5:34–37 “Above all, my brothers, do not swear.” — James 5:12 Jesus did not make exceptions for symbolic, ceremonial, or traditional oaths. The issue is not merely the content of the vow, but the act of swearing itself—especially vows that bind the conscience. This creates a serious problem for Christians. Christ already bore the curse for believers, so Christians are not to call curses upon themselves. The gospel operates in the light, not in secrecy. And a believer’s conscience belongs to Christ alone, not to any human institution. “You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men.” — 1 Corinthians 7:23 “There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed.” — Luke 12:2 Some common defenses are often raised. “It’s only symbolic.” “We don’t use that language anymore.” “It’s just tradition.” But Scripture answers simply: Jesus said, do not swear. Symbolic or not, a vow is still a vow. This is not an attack on individuals. Many Masons are sincere and unaware of the historical and biblical issues involved. But sincerity does not override Scripture, and tradition does not sanctify disobedience. At minimum, Freemasonry requires oaths Jesus warned against, secrecy Scripture condemns, and allegiances Scripture forbids. That alone should give every Christian pause, even before considering deeper doctrinal concerns. “For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.” — Romans 14:23 Truth does not need secrecy. Christ does not require oaths. Our allegiance belongs to Him alone. - More Joy Ministries #MoreJoyMinistries #Freemasons
