DOES THE BIBLE TEACH YOU CAN LOSE SALVATION?
A FULL RESPONSE TO THE 5 MOST COMMON PASSAGES:
Few doctrines create more fear, confusion, and division than this one:
Can a truly saved person lose salvation?
If salvation is by grace through faith 'and not by works', then it must remain secure by grace, not by works. If you could lose it, you would have to lose it by failure. And if failure can remove salvation, then salvation was never grace to begin with.
Let’s examine the five passages most often used against eternal security.
1. MATTHEW 7:23 — “I NEVER KNEW YOU”
Jesus says:
“I never knew you; depart from Me.”
The Greek is oudepote egnōn humas — “I never at any time knew you.”
He does not say: “I knew you once and then rejected you.”
He says: “I never knew you.”
That is not lost salvation.
That is false profession.
These people pointed to their works -prophecy, miracles, casting out demons - as their proof. They trusted activity, not Christ.
Religious activity does not equal regeneration.
2. HEBREWS 6:4-6 “IMPOSSIBLE TO RENEW”
This is the heavy one.
The passage describes people who were:
-Enlightened
-Tasted the heavenly gift
-Partakers of the Holy Spirit
-Tasted the good word of God
Notice something critical.
It does not say they were justified.
It does not say they were sealed.
It does not say they were born again.
The language describes exposure, not regeneration.
You can taste something without swallowing it.
The wilderness generation saw miracles, ate manna, experienced God’s power.. yet most never believed (Hebrews 3 makes that clear).
Hebrews 6 describes people who came extremely close to salvation and then rejected Christ publicly.
The author then says in verse 9:
“But we are convinced of better things concerning you - things that accompany salvation.”
That statement proves the previous description did NOT describe salvation itself.
3. HEBREWS 10:26 “NO MORE SACRIFICE FOR SINS”
“If we go on sinning willfully…”
Context matters.
Hebrews was written to Jews tempted to abandon Christ and return to temple sacrifices.
The “willful sin” is not struggling with sin.
It is rejecting Christ’s finished sacrifice and going back to animal offerings.
There is no other sacrifice available.
If someone rejects the only sufficient sacrifice, nothing else remains.
This is about apostasy from belief - not a believer losing salvation because they sinned.
If sin caused loss of salvation, no one would remain saved five minutes.
4. JOHN 15 - THE BRANCHES THAT ARE CUT OFF
Jesus says branches that do not abide are cut off.
Two key truths:
First - The branch is “in Me” in a visible covenant sense, like Judas was among the twelve.
Second - Abiding is evidence of genuine life.
A dead branch attached externally still gets cut off.
True believers bear fruit because life flows from the vine.
John himself explains this in 1 John 2:19:
“They went out from us, but they were not of us.”
Leaving proved they never truly belonged.
5. BOOK OF LIFE - NAMES BLOTTED OUT:
Revelation mentions names being blotted out.
But notice:
Revelation 13:8
Names written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world.
Revelation 17:8
Names not written from the foundation of the world.
The Book of Life language reflects divine foreknowledge and election.
When Revelation 3:5 says, “I will not blot out his name,” it is a promise of security - not a threat of removal.
It is reassurance.
WHAT DOES THE BIBLE CLEARLY TEACH?
John 10:28
“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish.”
Romans 8:30
Those justified will be glorified.
Ephesians 1:13–14
Believers are sealed with the Holy Spirit as a guarantee.
If salvation can be lost, then:
- Eternal life isn’t eternal
- The Spirit’s seal isn’t a guarantee
- Justification can be reversed
- Christ’s intercession can fail
That contradicts the entire gospel framework.
THE REAL BIBLICAL BALANCE:
The Bible teaches two parallel truths-
True believers are eternally secure.
False believers are eventually exposed.
Warnings in Scripture are not threats against genuine salvation.
They are guardrails that expose counterfeit faith.
If someone walks away permanently, Scripture explains it clearly:
“They were not of us.”
The gospel is not: “Stay saved by trying hard.”
The gospel is: “Christ finished it.”
Salvation is not maintained by your grip on Him.
It is secured by His grip on you.
