What Does It Mean to Follow Christ?
To follow Christ is not merely to believe that He exists. Even demons believe that and tremble (James 2:19).
To follow Christ is to reorder your entire life around Him as Lord.
Jesus did not say, “Agree with Me.”
He said, “Follow Me.” (Matthew 4:19)
That word follow means to walk behind Him, submit to His authority, trust His direction, and go where He leads, even when it costs you something.
Jesus defined it plainly:
“If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” (Luke 9:23)
Following Christ means dying to self-rule.
It means surrendering the throne of your own life and placing Jesus there instead.
It means obedience, not convenience.
It means truth, not trend.
It means faithfulness, not feelings.
Jesus said,
“Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46)
That is a piercing question.
To follow Christ means learning His words, loving His ways, and living out His commands.
Not perfectly..but sincerely.
Not sinlessly...but humbly and repentantly.
Jesus said,
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” (John 10:27)
Following Christ means recognizing His voice in Scripture and responding with obedience.
It means loving what He loves and hating what He hates.
It means forgiving when you want revenge.
It means serving when you want comfort.
It means standing for truth when the world pressures you to stay silent.
Jesus said,
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)
Following Christ is not about earning salvation.
We are saved by grace alone through faith alone (Ephesians 2:8–9).
But saving faith always produces a changed life.
As James wrote,
“Faith without works is dead.” (James 2:17)
Not because works save us,
but because true faith transforms us.
To follow Christ means trusting Him even when you don’t understand the path.
It means clinging to Him when life hurts.
It means continuing after Him when others turn back.
When many disciples walked away, Jesus asked the Twelve,
“Will you also go away?”
Peter answered, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” (John 6:67–68)
That is the heart of a true follower.
Following Christ means you belong to Him.
Your life is no longer your own.
“You are not your own, for you were bought with a price.” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20)
It means living with eternity in view.
It means loving God and loving people.
It means taking His name seriously and representing Him faithfully.
Jesus never promised comfort.
He promised a cross.
He promised persecution.
He promised eternal life.
“In this world you will have tribulation. But be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
So what does it mean to follow Christ?
It means Jesus is not an accessory to your life.
He is the center of it.
It means you don’t just admire Him.
You obey Him.
It means you don’t just call Him Savior.
You submit to Him as Lord.
And it means that one day, when you stand before Him,
you will not hear, “You knew about Me.”
You will hear,
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:21)
