The Dimensions of the New Jerusalem: (Revelation 21) One of the most astonishing descriptions in all of Scripture is found in Revelation 21—the unveiling of the eternal city God has prepared for His redeemed people. What Is the New Jerusalem? The New Jerusalem is the future, literal dwelling place of God with His people after the final judgment. This is not symbolic language—it is measured, detailed, and described with precision. The Biblical Measurements: Revelation 21:15–17 tells us an angel measures the city with a golden reed- Length: 12,000 stadia Width: 12,000 stadia Height: 12,000 stadia Scripture states plainly: “Its length, breadth, and height are equal.” In modern terms: Approximately 1,400–1,500 miles long 1,400–1,500 miles wide 1,400–1,500 miles high This makes the city a perfect three-dimensional structure, unprecedented in human history. The Wall: Thickness: 144 cubits Roughly 216 feet thick Designed for holiness, permanence, and beauty—not defense Why Some Believe It Could Be a Pyramid Scripture gives exact dimensions but does not explicitly name the external geometric shape. Reasons some suggest a pyramid-like structure: "If in 3 dimensions" Equal dimensions allow for more than one form. A pyramid can have equal length, width, and height. God’s dwelling often ascends God repeatedly reveals Himself on elevated places such as Mount Sinai, Mount Zion, and the mountain of the Lord. Throne focus: Revelation 22 places God’s throne at the center of the city, drawing attention upward toward His presence. Biblical symbolism: Height in Scripture represents authority, glory, and divine rule. Scripture does not demand this conclusion, but it allows thoughtful discussion. How the New Jerusalem Fits on a Circular Globe: A common objection is how a city this large could fit on the earth. Biblically and logically, the answer is yes. Earth’s surface area is immense Earth has over 196 million square miles of surface area. The New Jerusalem would occupy roughly 2 million square miles, about 1 percent of the planet’s surface. Vertical design reduces horizontal strain Because the city rises upward, it does not require endless horizontal sprawl. Curvature is not a problem: Continents, cities, and mountain ranges already exist on a curved globe. A divinely designed structure is not limited by human engineering constraints. The city descends onto a renewed earth Revelation 21:2 says the city comes down from God out of heaven. Revelation 21:1 describes a new heaven and a new earth, transformed to receive God’s dwelling. God is not bound by present physics The Creator of the universe is fully capable of placing, sustaining, and glorifying His eternal city. The issue is not whether the city fits. The issue is whether God is able. Scripture answers that decisively. Biblical Balance What we know for certain: The city is literal The dimensions are exact God dwells openly with His people Creation itself is renewed to receive it What Scripture does not require us to settle: The precise external geometry The focus is not architectural speculation, but God dwelling with redeemed humanity. The Promise: “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them.” Revelation 21:3 This is not myth. This is not allegory. This is the eternal home of those redeemed by Jesus Christ. Tony Campbell
