📖 WHAT IS BIBLICAL HERMENEUTICS? (KJV) Rightly Dividing the Word of God: Biblical hermeneutics is the study of the principles and methods used to interpret the Bible correctly. It is not about inserting our own ideas into Scripture, but about understanding what God has already spoken. 📜 The command to interpret Scripture properly is biblical: “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” — 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV) The purpose of biblical hermeneutics is to help believers interpret, understand, and apply God’s Word faithfully. FOUNDATIONAL LAWS OF BIBLICAL HERMENEUTICS: 1️⃣ THE LITERAL INTERPRETATION OF SCRIPTURE- The primary rule of hermeneutics is this: 📖 Scripture is to be understood in its plain and normal sense, unless the text clearly indicates symbolism or figures of speech. The Bible means what it says and says what it means. 🔍 Example: When Jesus spoke of feeding “the five thousand”: “When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up?” — Mark 8:19 (KJV) Hermeneutics teaches us to understand this literally—real people, real food, and a real miracle. To spiritualize the number or deny the miracle is to do injustice to the text and ignore the purpose of language, which is to clearly communicate truth. 2️⃣ HISTORICAL, GRAMMATICAL, AND CONTEXTUAL INTERPRETATION: 📚 Historical Context- We must understand the culture, setting, and situation behind the passage. “Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying…” — Jonah 1:1 (KJV) Knowing Israel’s history with Assyria helps explain Jonah’s reluctance to go to Nineveh. 📝 Grammatical Context: Grammar matters. “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;” — Titus 2:13 (KJV) The grammatical structure clearly identifies Jesus as both God and Savior. 📖 Contextual Interpretation: Verses must never be isolated from their surrounding context. “What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?” — Ecclesiastes 1:3 (KJV) The phrase under the sun (used repeatedly in Ecclesiastes) establishes the earthly perspective from which the book is written. 3️⃣ SCRIPTURE INTERPRETS SCRIPTURE: The Bible is its own best commentary. “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” — Isaiah 8:20 (KJV) Clear passages help interpret more difficult ones. 🔍 Example: Isaiah’s warning against trusting Egypt: “Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help…” — Isaiah 31:1 (KJV) This aligns with God’s earlier command: “But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt…” — Deuteronomy 17:16 (KJV) ⚠️ A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING: Some believe studying hermeneutics limits the Holy Spirit. Scripture teaches otherwise. “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” — John 17:17 (KJV) Biblical hermeneutics protects us from: ❌ Misusing Scripture ❌ Forcing personal bias onto the text ❌ Allegorizing what God intended literally - WHY BIBLICAL HERMENEUTICS MATTERS: “For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.” — Psalm 119:89 (KJV) If God’s Word is settled, our responsibility is to handle it faithfully. 📖 Study the Word. 📖 Interpret it correctly. 📖 Live it boldly. That is why biblical hermeneutics is essential. - More Joy Ministries
