APOPHIS, WORMWOOD, AND THE QUESTION OF PROPHETIC SIGNS IN THE HEAVENS: A massive asteroid named Apophis is scheduled to pass extremely close to Earth on Friday, April 13, 2029. Because of its size, speed, and timing, some have connected this object to the prophetic “star called Wormwood” described in the book of Revelation. While Scripture warns us to watch the signs of the times, it also calls us to handle prophecy carefully, comparing Scripture with Scripture and avoiding speculation presented as certainty. THE SIXTH SEAL AND COSMIC DISTURBANCES: Revelation 6:12-17 describes a terrifying global event during the opening of the sixth seal. Scripture says there will be a great earthquake, the sun will become dark, the moon will appear like blood, and stars will fall from heaven to earth like figs shaken from a tree. The sky is described as receding like a scroll, and humanity responds in terror, recognizing the wrath of the Lamb. This passage describes worldwide devastation and fear unlike anything humanity has experienced. The language suggests massive cosmic and geological upheaval that shakes the entire planet. THE THIRD TRUMPET AND THE STAR CALLED WORMWOOD: Revelation 8:10–11 describes another event during the trumpet judgments. A great star falls from heaven, burning like a torch, striking a third of the rivers and springs of water. Scripture says the name of this star is Wormwood, and it causes the waters to become bitter, leading to widespread death. The word Wormwood refers to bitterness and poisoning. The imagery suggests contamination of freshwater sources on a global scale. APOPHIS AND ITS NAME ORIGIN: The asteroid Apophis is named after Apep, a serpent figure from Egyptian mythology associated with chaos, darkness, and opposition to divine order. Some draw symbolic parallels between this mythological destroyer and biblical imagery of judgment or destruction. In Greek, a similar destructive title appears in Revelation 9 describing Abaddon in Hebrew and Apollyon in Greek, both meaning destroyer. These connections cause some prophecy students to see symbolic patterns between ancient language, mythology, and future biblical events. WHAT SCIENCE CURRENTLY SAYS: Apophis is estimated to travel approximately 28,000 miles per hour, measures roughly 1,100 feet in diameter, and weighs about 20 million metric tons. Scientists originally feared a potential impact, but current NASA trajectory calculations indicate the asteroid will pass safely by Earth. Some independent researchers and critics have raised concerns about trajectory uncertainty, while mainstream scientific consensus continues to state there is no known impact risk in 2029. Historically, asteroid orbit calculations improve as tracking technology advances. At this time, space agencies worldwide continue monitoring Apophis closely. PROPHECY TIMELINE CONSIDERATIONS: Within interpretation of biblical prophecy, the Wormwood event described in Revelation occurs during the trumpet judgments, which are positioned within the Tribulation period. Many prophecy scholars place these trumpet judgments after the opening of the seals and within a structured sequence of escalating global judgments. Some students of prophecy attempt to connect Apophis with feast day patterns, Hebrew calendar cycles, or midpoint Tribulation calculations. While these correlations are interesting to examine, Scripture never directly identifies a specific asteroid, comet, or celestial body by name outside the symbolic description of Wormwood. COMETS AND OTHER CELESTIAL SIGNS: Throughout history, comets have appeared as fiery torchlike objects in the sky. Ancient observers often described them using similar language to biblical prophetic imagery. Modern astronomy continues discovering large celestial objects with long and unpredictable orbital cycles, including NEOWISE and other deep space comets. These discoveries remind believers that God’s universe is vast, ordered, and capable of fulfilling prophetic events in ways humanity cannot fully predict. SIGNS IN THE HEAVENS: Jesus directly taught that celestial signs would accompany the final generation before His return. Luke 21:25–28 states there will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars, along with global distress and fear as the powers of heaven are shaken. Yet Jesus also commands believers not to respond with panic, but with expectation and readiness, lifting their heads because redemption draws near. A BALANCED BIBLICAL RESPONSE: Scripture calls believers to watch, study prophecy, and remain spiritually alert. At the same time, it warns against setting dates, forcing prophetic fulfillment onto current events prematurely, or allowing fear to drive interpretation. The Bible presents prophecy not as entertainment or speculation, but as motivation for holiness, urgency in sharing the Gospel, and confidence in God’s sovereignty. Whether Apophis is simply another celestial object or part of a larger prophetic pattern remains unknown. What Scripture makes absolutely clear is that one day cosmic signs will accompany the return of Christ, and history is moving toward that appointed moment. The question is not whether signs will come. The question is whether hearts are ready when they do. “Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” Luke 21:28 - More Joy Ministries #MoreJoyMinistries
