REVELATION: (A BOOK SATURATED IN THE OLD TESTAMENT) Many people think the Book of Revelation is mysterious because it is new or strange. In reality, it feels mysterious to modern readers because it is deeply Old Testament. Scholars estimate that Revelation contains 300–600 allusions to the Old Testament—yet it never directly quotes the Old Testament even once. Instead, it echoes, weaves, and reuses the language, imagery, and symbols God had already revealed. With only 404 verses, Revelation averages nearly one Old Testament allusion per verse. EXAMPLES OF OLD TESTAMENT ALLUSIONS IN REVELATION: The Lamb: Revelation 5:6 – The Lamb slain Exodus 12 – The Passover lamb Isaiah 53:7 – The suffering servant led like a lamb Jesus is revealed as the fulfillment of the Passover and the suffering servant. The Serpent / Dragon: Revelation 12:9 – “That ancient serpent” Genesis 3:1–15 – The serpent in Eden Revelation identifies Satan as the same enemy from the beginning. This is the final chapter of a story that began in Genesis. The Throne Room: Revelation 4 Isaiah 6 Ezekiel 1 Daniel 7 John is not inventing a new vision. He is standing in the same throne room seen by the prophets. Lampstands: Revelation 1:12–13 Zechariah 4 – The golden lampstand Exodus 25 – The menorah in the Tabernacle God’s people are portrayed as His light, just as in the Old Testament. The Little Scroll: Revelation 10 Ezekiel 2–3 – The prophet eats the scroll God’s word is sweet to receive and bitter to proclaim, unchanged from Ezekiel to John. The Beasts: Revelation 13 Daniel 7 – Beasts representing empires Revelation builds directly on Daniel’s prophecy, expanding it rather than replacing it. The New Heavens and New Earth: Revelation 21–22 Isaiah 65–66 Genesis 1–2 The Bible ends where it began: creation restored, Eden returned, God dwelling with man. THE BIG TAKEAWAY: Revelation is not a code book for modern headlines. It is the culmination of everything God revealed before. If you do not know the Old Testament, Revelation feels confusing. If you do know the Old Testament, Revelation feels familiar. Revelation is Genesis through Malachi brought to completion in Jesus Christ. “The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” (Revelation 19:10) - Tony Campbell - More Joy Ministries
