The traditional study outline follows eight major covenants from Eden to Jesus Christ. Scripture also records others, including God’s priestly covenant with Phinehas in Numbers 25:12–13. EDENIC COVENANT Before the Fall, God gave mankind dominion over creation and placed Adam in the garden. Adam could eat freely, except from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Disobedience carried the penalty of death. Genesis 1:26–28 and 2:15–17 ADAMIC COVENANT After Adam sinned, God pronounced judgment. Pain, toil, and death entered man’s experience. God also promised that the woman’s Seed would bruise the serpent’s head. Christians recognize this as the first promise pointing toward Christ’s victory over Satan. Edenic and Adamic are study names for God’s dealings with mankind before and after the Fall. Genesis 3:14–19 NOAHIC COVENANT After the Flood, God established His covenant with Noah, his descendants, and every living creature. Never again would a flood destroy all flesh. The rainbow is the token of that covenant. Genesis 9:8–17 ABRAHAMIC COVENANT God called Abraham and promised him land, descendants, and blessing. His descendants would become a great nation. Through him, all families of the earth would be blessed. The land promise was specifically included in the covenant God made with him. Genesis 12:1–3 and 15:18 MOSAIC COVENANT At Mount Sinai, Israel entered a covenant with God through Moses. The people agreed to obey His commandments. This covenant included laws, sacrifices, and blessings or judgments tied to Israel’s obedience. Exodus 19:3–6 and 24:3–8 Deuteronomy 28 LAND COVENANT Before Israel entered Canaan, God spoke of their scattering among the nations and their eventual return to Him. He promised to gather them back to the land and circumcise their hearts so they would love Him. Deuteronomy 29:1 and 30:1–10 DAVIDIC COVENANT God promised David an enduring house, kingdom, and throne. Jesus Christ is the promised Son of David. Gabriel told Mary that He would receive David’s throne and that His kingdom would have no end. 2 Samuel 7:12–16 Luke 1:32–33 NEW COVENANT Through Jeremiah, God promised a New Covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. He would write His law on their hearts, forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. Jesus identified His own blood as the blood of that New Covenant. “This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.” Luke 22:20 KJV Jeremiah 31:31–34 #MoreJoyMinistries
