The man who wrote the Gospel of Mark may have been telling us about his own escape.
When Jesus was arrested, a young man was following Him with only a linen cloth around his body. They grabbed him, and he slipped out of the cloth and ran naked.
“And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.” Mark 14:52 KJV.
Mark never tells us who he was. He records the incident and moves straight into Jesus being taken before the high priest.
None of the other Gospel writers include it. That unusual detail has led many to believe Mark was describing something that happened to him personally. Scripture leaves the young man unnamed, so his identity isn’t certain.
If that was Mark, he was close enough to the arrest to get grabbed himself. Years later, when he wrote his Gospel, he included the moment he escaped with nothing.
We may be reading the writer’s own memory of that night without ever being given his name.
