Full Bible Study
This study is part of our Lost Books album. The Mount Hermon oath, the number two hundred, and the names of the Watcher leaders come from 1 Enoch, outside the 66 books of Scripture we use. We’re examining that account alongside Genesis, Jude, and 2 Peter. Scripture remains the authority.
Mount Hermon is a real mountain along the border of Lebanon and Syria. You can find it in your Bible, too. Deuteronomy 3:8 and 9 names it.
According to 1 Enoch 6, two hundred angels descended on Mount Hermon in the days of Jared. They wanted to take human wives and father children. Their leader, Semjaza, feared the others would back out and leave him to face the punishment alone.
He already called it a great sin. He just didn’t want to be the only one paying for it. So they swore an oath and bound themselves under mutual curses to carry out the plan together. Enoch connects the mountain’s name with that oath. They knew they were planning a rebellion and committed themselves to it anyway.
Read 1 Enoch 6:1 through 8.
Chapters 7 and 8 describe giants born from those unions and the Watchers teaching enchantments, astrology, and the making of weapons. The account describes their rebellion spreading corruption throughout mankind.
Genesis gives us the passage connected with that understanding:
“That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.”
Genesis 6:2 KJV.
Verse 4 describes giants in those days and children from these unions who became mighty men of renown. I understand these “sons of God” as heavenly beings who crossed the boundary God had established. That’s the understanding Enoch develops.
Jude describes angels “which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation.” He says God has reserved them in everlasting chains under darkness until judgment. Jude 6 KJV.
Peter likewise says God “spared not the angels that sinned” and delivered them into chains of darkness, reserved for judgment. His next example is the ancient world, Noah, and the Flood.
Read 2 Peter 2:4 and 5 KJV.
Those passages are why the angelic understanding of Genesis 6 is studied alongside Enoch. Whatever position a being once held in heaven, rebellion against God still brings judgment.
