HEBREW LETTER STUDY: ALEPH In God’s Image. I wanted to start this Hebrew study album with aleph, the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Most people just see it as the Hebrew version of “A” and keep moving, but aleph carries a lot more than that. It stands at the head of the alphabet, so right away it pushes you to think about what comes first, what is central, and where everything begins. Biblically, that answer is God. Aleph is often understood as being made up of three parts: an upper yod, a lower yod, and a slanted vav connecting them. I am not saying you build doctrine from the shape of a letter, but it is still a striking picture. One letter, yet made of three parts. As a Christian, that gets your attention fast. Then there is the numerical side. Yod = 10, vav = 6, and yod = 10, so aleph totals 26. That matters because YHWH also totals 26. So the traditional structure of aleph and the covenant name of God meet at the same number. Aleph is also tied to one, which fits the truth that the Lord is one. This also connects to Exodus 3, where God reveals Himself as “I AM THAT I AM.” God is not defined by anything outside Himself. He is not becoming. He is not improving. He is not depending on anything. He simply is. He is the self-existent One. That fits aleph well, because aleph keeps bringing you back to source, beginning, and headship. Man is presented as body, soul, and spirit. The body connects us to the physical world through sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. The soul deals with mind, will, and emotions. The spirit is tied to conscience, discernment, communion, and worship. Man is not just flesh. He was made with depth. He was made to know God, respond to God, commune with God, and worship God. That is also why sin does so much damage. It does not just make people do bad things. It throws the whole man out of order. Worship gets twisted. Discernment gets dulled. The will bends the wrong way. Fellowship with God is broken. Let's examine Adam. Adam is אדם. Remove the aleph, and what remains is דם - dam - blood. That is a strong picture. Cut off from God, man is not rising into something higher. He is diminished. He is losing what he was made for. Then aluph, carrying the idea of lord, master, or chief. That takes this out of the category of “interesting Hebrew facts” and makes it personal. If God is first, then He is not just to be studied. He is to be obeyed. He is Lord. Another strong point is av, meaning father, formed from the first two letters, aleph and beit. So the alphabet opens with father. That fits the whole point. Everything begins with Him. God is a consuming fire. God is light. God is love. And the Hebrew words used there begin with aleph. So even there, the letter keeps bringing you back to God’s nature. When you step back and look at it, aleph is doing a lot more than just starting the Hebrew alphabet. It points back to God’s name, God’s oneness, God’s place as first, and man being made in His image. It also reminds you that when man is cut off from God, he does not become more whole. He falls apart. That is why aleph is the right place to begin this album. Before the deeper word studies, before the patterns, before the rest of the letters, the foundation has to be settled. God is first. Man comes from Him. Man answers to Him. And apart from Him, man loses what he was made for. #MoreJoyMinistries
