WHY DID GOD COMMAND A BLUE THREAD? In Numbers 15, God gave Israel a command that seems oddly specific. He told them to put fringes on the borders of their garments and to put a blue thread in those fringes. “Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue.” Numbers 15:38 KJV The Hebrew word translated blue is תְּכֵלֶת, tekhelet. God was not giving Israel a fashion preference. He tells them exactly why the thread was there. “And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them.” Numbers 15:39 KJV Every time they looked down and saw that blue thread hanging from their garment, they were supposed to remember who they belonged to. There is another part of that verse we usually skip right past. “And that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring.” Their eyes would see something. Their heart would want something. Before they followed either one, there was that blue thread hanging right in front of them reminding them that they belonged to God. Blue also showed up all through the tabernacle. It was woven into the veil, the coverings and the garments connected with the priesthood. The high priest himself wore a robe of blue. God took a color they already associated with holy things and put it on the clothing of ordinary Israelites. They carried a visible reminder of holiness everywhere they went. The chapter ends the command with this. “That ye may remember, and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God.” Numbers 15:40 KJV That blue thread was there because people forget. We still do. We get distracted. We follow what looks good. We trust what we feel. We let our own heart talk us into things God already told us not to do. Israel had a blue thread hanging from their clothes. We have His Word. Remember who you belong to. #MoreJoyMinistries
