Scripture uses metaphors and allegories to teach truth. In Jude 1:12, the author calls false teachers clouds without water.
This imagery describes men who fail to deliver on their spiritual promises.
Jude was the brother of James and the half-brother of Jesus. He saw the rise of apostasy in the early church.
Apostasy is the formal abandonment of the faith. Because many believers were turning away from the gospel, Jude urged them to contend for the truth.
Jude 1:11 compares these teachers to Cain, Balaam, and Korah. They possess the same hatred, greed, and rebellion that defined those men.
These qualities are completely contrary to the gospel of Christ.
Jude also calls them hidden reefs at your love feasts. Love feasts were communal meals intended for fellowship.
These false teachers infiltrated these gatherings like reefs under the water. They lurked unnoticed and threatened to wreck the souls of those present, much like Judas did during his time with the disciples.
These men feast among the saints without fear. They pose as shepherds but feed only themselves.
Jesus warned us about these hired hands in John 10:12-13.
He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.
Jesus is the only true shepherd. He lays down His life for the sheep.
False teachers are like waterless clouds or waterless springs. We expect rain when clouds gather, but these clouds pass over without giving a drop.
They promise spiritual refreshment that never arrives. They boast of gifts they do not possess, as Proverbs 25:14 explains.
Like clouds and wind without rain is one who boasts of gifts never given.
If you set your expectations on these men, you will remain parched. Any water they offer will leave you thirsty again.
Only Jesus provides the living water that leads to eternal life. He alone sends the showers of blessing.
These teachers are disconnected from the source of life. Jude describes them as fruitless trees in late autumn that are twice dead and uprooted.
A genuine believer bears fruit that results in righteousness and eternal life.
You can spot a false teacher by his fruit. Look at the rain he provides or fails to provide.
The fruit tells the whole story, just as Jesus taught in Matthew 7:15-20.
