The Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem confronted Jesus because His disciples ate with unwashed hands. This was a matter of ritual purity, not hygiene. These hand-washing practices originated from rabbinic tradition rather than the law of Moses. The disciples were not transgressing God’s commands, but the religious elite prided themselves on their rigorous adherence to human tradition. Mark records their preoccupation with washing cups, pots, and dining couches to illustrate how far they took these requirements. Mark 7:1-5 Jesus addressed their hypocrisy by quoting Isaiah 29:13. He pointed out that they honored God with their lips while their hearts remained far from Him. They placed the commandments of men above the requirements of God. Jesus specifically noted how they used the Corban loophole to avoid honoring their parents, effectively nullifying God’s word through their own traditions. Mark 7:6-15 "This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men." Jesus turned to the crowd to clarify what truly defiles a person. He stated that nothing entering from the outside can defile someone. The real problem lies in what comes out of a person. This shifted the focus from external religious performance to the state of the internal heart. His disciples asked for clarification once they were inside the house. Jesus explained that food enters the stomach and is expelled rather than reaching the heart. In doing so, He declared all foods clean and dismantled the ritual purity laws that previously governed diet. Mark 7:17-23 "For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person." Religious performance is dangerous when it serves as a substitute for internal transformation. Purity is not determined by what you eat or how you wash your hands. It is determined by the condition of your heart. Jesus does not tell us we are okay as we are. He reveals that we are in a worse state than we imagine, and He invites us to come to Him for a solution that mere tradition can never provide. #MoreJoyMinistries
