In Matthew 6:25–34, Jesus speaks to His followers about trusting the provision of their heavenly Father. He has just finished explaining the necessity for kingdom servants to offer their total devotion to God as their only Master.
Those who make an undivided commitment to the King, placing their absolute trust in Him, receive His unreserved care in return.
Jesus tells them clearly: "Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear."
In a similar sermon, Jesus states, "For life is more than food, and your body more than clothing." The essence of life transcends temporal concerns.
Food and clothing matter, but they are not the primary focus for a believer.
Your primary concerns are loving the Lord, loving others, and seeking first God’s kingdom and His righteousness. Jesus then points to the birds of the air to demonstrate your value: "Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are you not much more valuable than they?"
God treasures you as the only creature made in His image. If He feeds and waters birds and flowers, He will certainly provide for you.
Jesus asks, "Why do you have so little faith?" Anxiousness is the opposite of trust.
God’s word instructs you: "Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.
Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus."
Peter encourages you to give all your worries to God because He cares for you. Jesus tells His disciples: "Don’t let your hearts be troubled.
Trust in God, and trust also in me."
The cares of this life dominate the thoughts of unsaved people, but Jesus reassures you that the Father already knows what you need. You can have confidence in His care if you are wholly devoted to Him.
If you seek the kingdom of God above all else and live righteously, God will provide. He keeps in perfect peace all who trust in Him.
Jesus tells you not to worry about tomorrow because tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.
He hammers this point home because He understands your tendency to focus on the problems of this world rather than the sovereign ruler of it.
Blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope. They are like trees planted along a riverbank with roots that reach deep into the water.
They are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought.
You can stop stressing about tomorrow because this world is not your home. God holds your days in His hands.
In everything, He is working out His good plan for your life. You are secure in the Father’s grip.
