The True Meaning of the Rainbow in the Bible: In the Bible, the rainbow signifies God's promise to never again flood the earth, embodying His mercy and commitment to redemption. It's fascinating that numerous myths depict the rainbow as a kind of supernatural "bridge," as the primary message the rainbow conveys is God's generous and magnificent plan for redemption, offering humanity an opportunity for a fresh start. For a long time, scientists have understood that rainbows form when raindrops function as "tiny prisms." When sunlight hits one side of a water droplet, it reflects off the opposite side and then emerges into the sky as a circular arc or bow of colors, which is refracted or split into the color spectrum. Rainbows consist of a continuous range of about 1 million colors that the human eye cannot distinguish. Instead, we are only able to perceive seven distinct color hues: Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Actually, a rainbow is essentially an "optical illusion" that manifests only when someone views it from the perfect angle in relation to the light source. Nonetheless, the enchanting and mystical nature of rainbows has led to their inclusion in various myths across numerous cultures worldwide. For instance, the Norse mythology depicted it as a Bifrost "bridge" that allowed gods to travel from earth to their realm known as Asgard. In a similar vein, ancient Japanese culture believed that rainbows served as a means for their departed ancestors to return to earth, while the Navajo viewed it as a pathway for sacred spirits. Even in modern times, there exists a well-known Irish tale (often shared in jest) that claims there is a pot of gold at the end of every rainbow, which is protected by a clever leprechaun. Since the devil is referred to as the "father of lies" (John 8:44), all these myths surrounding rainbows are falsehoods that divert us from uncovering the genuine symbolic significance they hold. So, what does the rainbow truly signify? To find the answer, we need to look past the children’s coloring books and some bizarre movies, and turn to the Bible — our only genuinely infallible, inspired, and authoritative source of truth. The rainbow is first mentioned in Scripture towards the conclusion of the worldwide flood narrative in Genesis 6-9. Due to the persistent evil and wickedness of humanity (Genesis 6:5-12), God chose to send rain for 40 days and nights, flooding the entire earth — resulting in the death of everyone and everything except for a man named Noah, his family, and a selection of animals that were safely housed within a wooden ark. God's Promises Represented by the Rainbow: Once the floodwaters had receded and Noah was able to step out of the ark onto dry land, he constructed an altar and presented a burnt offering to God. In response, God made this promise to Noah and his family: Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying: “And as for Me, behold, I establish My covenant with you and with your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you, of all that go out of the ark, every beast of the earth. Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” And God said: “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” (Genesis 9:8-16 NKJV) The Rainbow Is a Reminder of The Gospel: And it is great news for us as well because this story clearly and beautifully points us to the time when God sent his own Son, Jesus, to die on a cross and then rise again to give humanity an amazing opportunity to escape judgment by being “hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3; 1 Peter 3:20-22; 2 Peter 2:9). ...if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved (Romans 10:9-10)
