Most people spend October 31 focused on candy and superstition. Protestants celebrate something far more significant. We mark Reformation Day, which commemorates the greatest move of God since the days of the Apostles. Few realized that the sound of a hammer hitting the church door in Wittenberg would reshape Western society. Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to that door on October 31, 1517. He sparked a debate that fundamentally changed history. Luther followed in the footsteps of Augustine of Hippo as one of the most important figures in church history. This monk turned law student quickly drew attention once his theses circulated across Europe. He began by challenging the sale of salvation. Eventually, his study of Scripture led him to reject the errors of Rome regarding church tradition and the nature of righteousness. Luther emphasized that our good works never merit God’s favor. We are saved by grace alone through faith alone. Good works follow our faith rather than serving as the basis for our standing before God. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do (Eph. 2:8-10). God declares us righteous because He imputes the perfect righteousness of Christ to our account through faith. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Cor. 5:21). Luther’s work brought essential reforms to the church and society. He translated the Bible into German, placing the Word of God directly into the hands of the people. He moved the liturgy into the common tongue so that everyone could understand the preaching of the Word. He also rejected the unbiblical ban on marriage for the clergy. He recovered the biblical view of the priesthood of all believers. He showed that all honest work carries dignity because we serve our Creator through it. Much of what we enjoy in the West today stems from these shifts. Luther’s legacy remains evident in the creeds and confessions of Protestant churches worldwide. Use this Reformation Day to sharpen your understanding of biblical truth. Be ready to defend the Gospel and pray for another reformation in our church and culture today. #MoreJoyMinistries
