THE RAINBOW & THE PRISM:
(God’s Covenant Written in Light)
The rainbow is not an accident of nature.
It is a designed interaction between light, water, and law—all established by God.
Scripture tells us plainly:
“I have set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.”
(Genesis 9:13)
To understand the rainbow, we must understand how light works in a prism.
HOW A RAINBOW FORMS — PRISM PHYSICS
White light appears colorless, but it actually contains every color.
When light passes through a prism—or a raindrop—it does three things:
Refraction – Light bends as it enters the water
Dispersion – The light separates into distinct wavelengths (colors)
Reflection – The light reflects inside the drop
Refraction again – As it exits, the colors spread out visibly
Each raindrop acts like a tiny prism.
The result is always the same:
Red
Orange
Yellow
Green
Blue
Indigo
Violet
Seven colors.
Every time.
No variation. No evolution. No randomness.
Because God fixed the laws of light.
GOD CALLS IT “MY BOW”
In Hebrew, the word for rainbow is qesheth — the same word used for a war bow.
But notice something remarkable:
God does not aim His bow toward the earth.
The arc points upward.
It is a picture of peace.
The weapon of judgment is hung in the clouds, unstrung, turned away from mankind.
“And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant.”
(Genesis 9:16)
The rainbow is not about humanity remembering God.
It is about God remembering His promise.
LIGHT, WATER, AND THE WORD
Scripture consistently links:
Light → Truth, Christ, Revelation
Water → Cleansing, judgment, mercy
“God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5)
“The entrance of Thy words giveth light.” (Psalm 119:130)
When pure light passes through water, it does not disappear.
It reveals what was already there.
That is theology in physics.
THE RAINBOW STILL PREACHES
Every rainbow still declares:
God keeps covenant
God governs creation
God restrains judgment
God controls light itself
The prism does not invent the colors.
It reveals them.
And creation still obeys Him.
“While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat… shall not cease.”
(Genesis 8:22)
The rainbow is not a symbol mankind redefined.
It is a sermon God designed.
