GENESIS 1:1 ( THE FOUNDATION OF EVERYTHING) “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Genesis 1:1 (KJV) This verse is not poetic symbolism, mythology, or philosophical speculation. It is a historical and theological declaration that defines reality itself. Before light, before angels, before matter, before time itself, God already was. Genesis does not attempt to prove God’s existence. It assumes it. Everything that follows in Scripture stands or falls on this opening statement. THE HEBREW TEXT: בְּרֵאשִׁית בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים אֵת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֵת הָאָרֶץ Transliteration: Berēʾšîṯ bārāʾ ʾĕlōhîm ʾēṯ haššāmayim wəʾēṯ hāʾāreṣ KEY HEBREW WORDS: Berēʾšîṯ — “In beginning” It is not “the beginning,” but an absolute beginning. This is the start of time itself. God does not enter time here; time enters existence here. Scripture later confirms this truth when it says, “From everlasting to everlasting, thou art God” (Psalm 90:2). Bārāʾ — “Created” This verb is used exclusively of God in Scripture. It means to create from nothing. God did not shape pre-existing matter. He brought all things into existence by His will. Hebrews affirms this when it says that what is seen was not made from things that are visible (Hebrews 11:3). ʾĔlōhîm — “God” Grammatically plural in form, yet consistently paired with singular verbs. This does not teach polytheism, but reveals a unity with complexity that Scripture progressively unfolds. Already in the first verse of the Bible, God reveals depth beyond simplicity. “The heavens and the earth” This is a Hebrew merism, a figure of speech meaning the totality of all that exists. The unseen realm and the visible realm. The spiritual and the physical. Nothing exists outside God’s authority. THE GREEK SEPTUAGINT (LXX) Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἐποίησεν ὁ Θεὸς τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ τὴν γῆν Transliteration: En archē epoiēsen ho Theos ton ouranon kai tēn gēn KEY GREEK WORDS: En archē — “In beginning” This exact phrase appears again in John 1:1: “In the beginning was the Word.” John intentionally connects Genesis creation with the eternal existence of Christ. Creation and Christ cannot be separated. Epoiēsen — “Made / Created” The Greek preserves the same truth found in Hebrew. Creation is intentional, personal, and divinely willed. There is no chaos god, no cosmic accident, and no random chance. CHIASTIC STRUCTURE OF GENESIS 1:1 A — In the beginning (time begins) B — God (the eternal subject) C — Created (divine action from nothing) B′ — The heavens (the unseen realm) A′ — The earth (the material realm within time) The center focus is clear: God creates. Everything flows from Him, depends on Him, and exists for Him. WHAT THIS ONE VERSE ESTABLISHES Genesis 1:1 overturns atheism by affirming God’s existence. It overturns pantheism by separating God from creation. It overturns eternal matter by declaring a beginning. It overturns randomness by declaring intentional design. It overturns human supremacy by placing God first. Scripture confirms this truth repeatedly. “By the word of the LORD were the heavens made” (Psalm 33:6). “All things were made by Him” (John 1:3). “By Him all things consist” (Colossians 1:17). WHY THIS MATTERS: If Genesis 1:1 is true, then every miracle in Scripture is possible. Every promise is believable. Every command carries authority. This verse is the bedrock of the entire Bible.
