Genesis 1:3 — : (LET THERE BE LIGHT) “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” Genesis 1:3 (KJV) This verse marks a turning point in Scripture. Creation moves from silent chaos to spoken order. God does not wrestle with darkness. He speaks. THE HEBREW TEXT וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים יְהִי אוֹר וַיְהִי אוֹר Transliteration: Vayyōmer ʾĕlōhîm yehî ʾōr, vayehî ʾōr The sentence is short, direct, and powerful. There is no delay, no resistance, no process described. God speaks. Reality obeys. KEY HEBREW WORDS: Vayyōmer — “And God said” This is the first recorded speech of God in Scripture. Creation unfolds not through force, but through the Word. From this point forward, everything is shaped by what God says. Yehî — “Let there be” This is a jussive form expressing commanded existence. God is not wishing. He is decreeing. Light is summoned, not negotiated. ʾŌr — “Light” This is light itself, not the sun, moon, or stars. Those will come later. This is the introduction of created light into a previously dark world. Light exists before light-bearers. Vayehî — “And there was” The same root as “yehî.” What God commands immediately becomes reality. There is no gap between God’s word and its fulfillment. THE GREEK SEPTUAGINT (LXX): καὶ εἶπεν ὁ Θεὸς· γενηθήτω φῶς καὶ ἐγένετο φῶς Transliteration: Kai eipen ho Theos; genēthētō phōs; kai egeneto phōs The Greek mirrors the Hebrew precisely. Command. Fulfillment. KEY GREEK WORDS: Genēthētō — “Let it come into being” This verb emphasizes coming into existence, not rearranging something already there. Light is created by divine command. Phōs — “Light” This is the same word used throughout the New Testament to describe light as both physical reality and revealed truth. John deliberately draws on this word in his Gospel. CHIASTIC STRUCTURE — GENESIS 1:3 A — God speaks B — Command issued (“Let there be”) C — Light B′ — Command fulfilled (“There was”) A′ — God’s authority established Center Focus: Light exists because God spoke. THEOLOGICAL WEIGHT OF THIS VERSE: Light is not self-existent. Light is not eternal. Light is created and commanded. Darkness does not need to be removed first. Light simply enters, and darkness yields. This sets a pattern that runs through all of Scripture. SCRIPTURE INTERPRETS SCRIPTURE: Psalm 33:9 — “He spake, and it was done.” John 1:1–5 — The Word brings light into darkness. 2 Corinthians 4:6 — God who commanded light now shines in hearts. Colossians 1:16–17 — All things exist by His word and power. WHY THIS MATTERS: Order does not come before God speaks. Light does not come before God speaks. Life does not come before God speaks. Every act of creation begins with divine revelation. The same God who spoke light into a dark, chaotic world still brings clarity where there is confusion and truth where there is darkness. Genesis 1:3 teaches us something foundational: God’s Word does not describe reality. It creates it. Next: Genesis 1:4 — God separates the light from the darkness. The distinction between light and darkness is not philosophical. It is intentional. - More Joy Ministries - Tony Campbell #MoreJoyMinistries
