GENESIS 1:4 - (GOD DEFINES GOODNESS AND DRAWS THE LINE) “And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.” (Genesis 1:4, KJV) This verse marks the first value judgment in the Bible. God looks at what He has spoken into existence and declares, “It is good.” Before any law, culture, conscience, or commandment, God Himself defines what is good. Goodness is not a social construct, an evolutionary accident, or whatever feels right in the moment. Goodness is rooted in the nature and character of God. The Hebrew word for “good” here is tov (טוֹב). It means more than “pleasant.” It means morally right, complete, and aligned with God’s purpose. In other words, light isn’t just bright..it is right. Then God does something just as important. He separates the light from the darkness. This is the first act of distinction in Scripture. Before land and sea, before male and female, before Israel and the nations, God establishes that reality itself is built on boundaries. Light and darkness are not blended, merged, or treated as equal forces. They are distinguished. This becomes a pattern throughout the entire Bible. God separates light from darkness, truth from falsehood, holy from profane, life from death, and His people from the world. From the very beginning, Scripture teaches something our culture hates: God does not celebrate moral blur. He creates moral clarity. Light and darkness here are not just physical. They are theological. John later writes, “God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). Jesus then declares, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). Genesis 1:4 is already pointing forward to Christ. From the first page of the Bible, God is revealing that light comes from Him, goodness comes from Him, and moral truth comes from Him. Separation is not hatred. Separation is holiness. God separates not to destroy, but to define and protect. This verse quietly demolishes modern relativism. There is such a thing as good. There is such a thing as darkness. And God alone gets to define which is which. - More Joy Ministries #mojoministries
