Ephesians 6:10-18. Paul's description of the armor of God is not metaphor for metaphor's sake. He is writing from a Roman prison, surrounded by guards in full military gear. He is describing the actual equipment of Roman soldiers and applying it to spiritual warfare. The Belt of Truth (v.14) — The Roman soldier's belt held everything together. Loose truth = loose everything. You cannot stand in warfare without being anchored to what is actually real and true about God, yourself, and the enemy. The Breastplate of Righteousness (v.14) — The breastplate covered the vital organs. Righteousness here is not your own moral performance — it is the imputed righteousness of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21). This is not something you earn. It is something you wear by faith. The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace (v.15) — Roman soldiers wore hobnailed sandals for traction and stability. Your footing in spiritual warfare is the gospel — knowing what Christ has already done and being ready to move with it. The Shield of Faith (v.16) — The Roman scutum was a large curved shield, about 4 feet tall. When locked together with other shields, it created an impenetrable wall. Faith here is not a feeling — it is a deliberate act of taking God at His word in the face of the enemy's lies. The Helmet of Salvation (v.17) — Your mind is a battlefield. The helmet protects the head. You guard your mind by being secured in your salvation — not wondering if you have it, but standing on it. The Sword of the Spirit (v.17) — The only offensive weapon in the list. It is the rhema — the spoken, specific, active word of God. This is why Jesus answered every temptation with 'It is written.' This armor is not put on once. It is put on daily. In prayer. In the Word. In community. We are in a war — and the only losing strategy is forgetting it.
