One of the most common objections to Christianity is the claim that Jesus never actually said He was God — that it was a later invention by the church. Let's address this directly and from the text.
John 8:58 — 'Before Abraham was, I AM.' This is not a grammatical error. Jesus used the divine name I AM (Greek: egō eimi) — the same name God revealed to Moses in Exodus 3:14 ('I AM WHO I AM'). The Jewish audience understood this immediately — they picked up stones to kill Him for blasphemy.
John 10:30 — 'I and the Father are one.' The Greek word for 'one' here is hen — neuter, meaning unity of essence, not just purpose. Again, the Jews picked up stones (v.31) and charged Him with making Himself out to be God (v.33).
John 5:18 — The religious leaders sought to kill Him because 'he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.'
Mark 14:62 — At His trial, the high priest asked: 'Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?' Jesus answered: 'I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.' This is a direct quote from Daniel 7:13-14 — a messianic passage where divine authority is given. The high priest tore his clothes and declared blasphemy.
These are not subtle hints. These are direct claims, in context, with immediate reactions from people who understood exactly what was being said. Jesus claimed to be God. Repeatedly. Publicly. At the cost of His life.
