# The Trinity Is Not Modalism One of the most common heresies in the modern church is **modalism** — the idea that Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are simply three different modes or roles of one person. ## What Modalism Claims - God is one person who appears in three forms - Like water being ice, liquid, and steam - The Father becomes the Son, the Son becomes the Spirit ## Why It's Wrong At Jesus' baptism (Matthew 3:16-17), all three persons of the Trinity are present simultaneously: - The Son is being baptized - The Spirit descends as a dove - The Father speaks from heaven If modalism were true, this scene would be impossible. ## What the Trinity Actually Is One God in three co-eternal, co-equal persons. Not three gods (tritheism). Not one person in three roles (modalism). One being, three persons — distinct yet unified. > "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." — Matthew 28:19 Notice: **name** is singular. The three share one divine name.
