# The Armor of God > "Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil." — Ephesians 6:11 Paul's metaphor of spiritual armor is not decorative language. It's a battle manual. ## The Belt of Truth (v. 14a) The Roman soldier's belt held everything together. Truth is foundational — without it, nothing else holds. ## The Breastplate of Righteousness (v. 14b) Protects the heart. This is not self-righteousness, but the imputed righteousness of Christ. ## Shoes of the Gospel of Peace (v. 15) Roman soldiers wore caligae — studded sandals for grip in battle. The gospel gives us firm footing. ## The Shield of Faith (v. 16) The thureos was a full-body shield. Faith doesn't dodge the arrows — it extinguishes them. ## The Helmet of Salvation (v. 17a) Protects the mind. Assurance of salvation guards against doubt and deception. ## The Sword of the Spirit (v. 17b) The only offensive weapon. The Word of God — rhema, the spoken word — is how Jesus defeated Satan in the wilderness. ## Key Takeaway Notice Paul says the **whole** armor. Partial preparation leads to partial protection.
