# Ekklesia The Greek word **ἐκκλησία (ekklesia)** is translated "church" in most English Bibles. But the word itself has nothing to do with a building. ## Etymology - **ek** = out of - **kaleo** = to call Ekklesia literally means **"the called-out ones"** — a gathered assembly of people called out for a purpose. ## Historical Context In the Greco-Roman world, ekklesia referred to a political assembly of citizens called together to conduct civic affairs. When Jesus used this word in Matthew 16:18, His listeners would have understood it as a **governing body**, not a worship venue. ## What This Means The church is not where you go on Sunday. The church is **who you are**. You are the ekklesia — called out, assembled, and commissioned. > "And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." — Matthew 16:18
